New DUI Program In San Diego, California
« on: July 08, 2006, 08:32:18 PM »

According to an article <snipped>, the drinking and driving problem seems to be getting worse in the state of California.  Arrests in California grew from 15,924 to 17,129.  We’ve got to put a stop to this.  But how?

Well, another new program backed by a $1.1 million state grant is underway.  An eight-officer unit led by San Diego probation officer, Gonzalo Mendez, will be conducting unannounced visits to see if those who are on probation for drinking and driving have alcohol or drugs in their possession.  Previously, probationers would go to a county office to have tests.  Probation officers will also be checking to see if probationers are attending their court-ordered alcohol programs.

“We have to start dealing with them in different ways and with different approaches,” said William Kootsikas, regional program administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

It’s nice to see that the government is behind this issue and taking steps to create solutions.  First it was the new DUI command post here in San Diego.  Now it’s a better way - and I think a much more effective way - to prevent probationers from making more mistakes.
