ANY ATTORNEY LAWYER OR ANYONE STUDYING LAW> PLEASE HELP

Hello. i had several questions regarding a case my friend is in. so pretty much..here it is. he found a doctor who would give him some cough syrup for free. so went there and got his cough syrup and left. filled out paperwork with legit information including mine. because we r great friends and i was his emergency contact. later the next week, sum guys he hung around(gang members which were obviously not really his friends) asked him to go back to get another bottle. He agreed and went along with them. when he got there, his 'friends' explained the change of plans. because they knew where i lived, as well as my bestfriend,because of pass times when they dropped him off at my house, and because they knew i was all the family he pretty much had. claimed he had to rob the office or theyd handle me. He told me he was going to go walk in then walk right out and tell them there were too many ppl, but they had several of them follow him with all loaded guns except the 1 he was holding. unfortunately, there were no cameras to show that he was being watched and under duress. He had a nationwide search out for his arrest. and he ended up turning himself in after being extremely scared but felt he could prove his innocent. Now he is facing 3 life sentences for kidnapping, robbery charges, gun charges, that add up to another 12 years.  Unfortunately, because he has no money, or anyone he knows, so hes been switching lawyer to lawyer who dont give a care about him. now he has a public defendar who keeps responding to everything as i dont know, well see. hes facing a lot of charges. He also said 2 out of the 3 people identified him and the other didnt. Now to my real question. the lawyer also said next courtdate he is going to try to have a prelimenary hearing. now ive never studied law, so to my understanding from my internet research, that is when the judge decides if there is sufficient evidence and probable cause for the person on trial to have done the crime. i also seen that this is because courts are too busy and everyone cant have a trial and jury. Apparently, there the evidence can be little, and hearsay is allowed. My friend is fighting for his life, and hearsay is allowed? so i wanted to ask you, if there are no cameras, no fingerprints, no real probable cause( because me knowing my friend for 8 years, would not do somethin as too so stupid to coming back to the same doctors office he put his real legit information and mine which he always does on the documents, and coming back only a week later, and robbing the place, with a fake gun, and no mask or nothing. it doesnt add up) if they are only going by what he said she said, could this case be dropped? because the district attorney keeps saying he doesnt know. and he has studied law. so am i missing something? please give me any information you can..ANY! to any actions we can take from the information i gave u, to if we should take that action, and hiar another lawyer...i will truly appreciate it! please contact me anytime, for this is my really good friend. and he is a good person, just around the wrong crowd. and i know you probably hear that all the time, but thats in all honesty ..please respond..thank you again !
